Uber-cleaning-wowman-on-a-mission

This whole selling the house thing isn't as easy as I thought it was going to be. I keep a pretty neat, clean house on most occasions and it's not like I have anyone here other than the hubby to clean up after, but holy crap I've never realized how much dust there is in this place! It's rediculous and I think it'll be the bain of my existance until we've sold the little place. Sniff, sniff ~ our first house going to some other family... I hope to never live in another place w/ white carpet ~ it's just horrific!

End rant. Must get back to making the house look like something out of Southern Living... and probably nap a bit early today. Got any good house selling tips?

Thanks for the comment on my blog! And congratulations on you pregnancy. Stephanie told me all about it. My favorite house selling tips are to have brownies baking in the oven and a pot of coffee on so it smells homey and inviting. Also have music on the stereo. Hope this helps.

Mae, Aimee's parents are selling their house. Someone told her mom to take down some of the family pictures because it's easier for the buyer to see themselves in the house. Sometimes buying a home is an emotional thing - so you want them to see it as their home rather than your. I dunno if I totally believe it, but it kinda makes sense. Take care - Kevin

I read somewhere that you're supposed to put your family pictures away so that the people who come to your house can envision it as THEIR house. Also, fresh-cut flowers on the kitchen/dining room tables are nice too. I'll never forget when we sold our Condo, my husband set up an appt. for some people to take a look at it while I was out grocery shopping. They were STILL there when I got home & I had a trunkful of frozen foods that HAD to get into the freezer. I feel your pain in this department!!! Blugs!!!

Our realtor told us houses tend to sell quicker when all the walls are one neutral color... something about it easier for them to imagine their furniture in there... or what color they would like to paint the wall.

Making the rooms seem as spacious as possible is important. But they usually don't care about the garage, if you have one. So declutter the rooms and cram it all in the garage or the attic, maybe. Maybe read up on feng shui ...

Clean out the closets and put anything you can in storage...even if you have to rent one. You can paint and decorate many a flaw away but you can't fake closet space. The picture advise is dead on!!! I once heard a lady say she couldn't imagine herself in "that laddies kitchen." The owner had a huge self portrait in the living room. Always leave lamps on (avaiod harsh overhead lighting if possible) and windows shades open to allow as much light in as possible during a showing. Some realtors will do this for you...most won't. AND try not to be around when people look through the house.

I'll never forget when we were trying to unload - oops - I mean, SELL our previous home. I had a toddler and a preschooler - and sloppy eaters at that! Well, I had to run out with them for some reason, and just left the dining room table as is. When we returned home, I found the message on the machine that said they were bringing someone to look at the house while we were out - AARRGHH! I'm not proud to confess that I called the realtor and lied about a medical emergency occuring which made us abandon the house as it was...

So. Either put brownies or cookies in the oven on a VERY low temp, or bake bread...
